The Queensland Government, as part of the South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan and Program 2008, has committed A$297 million to deliver CoastConnect: Caloundra to Maroochydore Quality Bus Corridor, an initiative to improve public transport and manage the pressures of population growth on Sunshine Coast roads.

The TransLink Transit Authority has started investigations into a bus priority corridor between Caloundra and Maroochydore.

Using measures such as bus lanes, CoastConnect will play a vital role in managing traffic congestion along Nicklin Way, Brisbane Road and Aerodrome Road.

CoastConnect will:
  • be a road-based solution to give buses priority over cars between Caloundra and Maroochydore
  • introduce bus, transit and cycle lanes to major roads
  • give buses priority at some traffic lights and intersections
  • include architecturally designed bus stations at key locations
  • apply sustainable design principles and include enhanced safety features in bus station architecture
  • upgrade and review the location of existing bus stops and install additional stops to improve access to the bus network
  • offer real time travel information at bus stations
  • incorporate smart card ticketing
  • support increased bus movements in the corridor, including new bus routes and increased frequencies.

CoastConnect is expected to be constructed by 2016.

Why do we need CoastConnect?

To maintain the quality of life of current and future residents, investment in the transport network is required.

The Sunshine Coast:
  • is home to almost 300,000 people
  • population is expected to nearly double by 2026
  • hosts more than three million tourists a year
  • has the lowest rate of public transport use in South East Queensland.

CoastConnect will form an important part of the Sunshine Coast’s future public transport network along with other key TransLink Transit Authority initiatives like smart card, real time passenger information and continued funding for new bus services.

It will also link commuters to other infrastructure projects such as furture CAMCOS rail services at Caloundra, Kawana and Maroochydore. More information on other Sunshine Coast infrastructure projects can be found on the Queensland Transport website.
The benefits of CoastConnect

CoastConnect will:
  • make public transport more frequent, reliable, comfortable and easy to use – commuters will not need to carry a timetable
  • provide better connections to where people work, live and play
  • offer a congestion free alternative to private vehicle travel
  • reduce bus travel times by up to 25 minutes between Maroochydore and Caloundra
  • reduce traffic congestion, pollution and noise by enticing people out of their cars and onto public transport – for every full bus, there are 40 less cars on the road
  • enhance the image of the Sunshine Coast as a tourist destination.

About the planning

In 2006 TransLink conducted a pre-feasibility study to identify a potential alignment for the bus corridor between Caloundra and Maroochydore. This early planning was done to identify an alignment that would deliver the most benefits with the least impacts.

The TransLink Transit Authority is now developing a Concept Design and Impact Management Plan (CDIMP) to assess the benefits and impacts of CoastConnect alignment options.

The final CDIMP will:
  • identify the preferred alignment within the bus corridor
  • develop a design for the preferred alignment and seven bus station locations
  • investigate social, environmental, economic, financial and technical issues
  • investigate the benefits and impacts of the preferred alignment within the corridor
  • consider the community’s input on a range of planning, design and alignment issues
  • identify opportunities for integration with other infrastructure projects such as CAMCOS (proposed Sunshine Coast rail), Multi-Modal Transport Corridor (MMTC) and pedestrian and cyclist networks.

Consultation with the community will be a key component of this planning phase and will help ensure the preferred alignment meets local needs.

The TransLink Transit Authority will provide opportunities for consultation and will keep people informed over the next 12 months through newsletters, community information sessions and static displays.
