Onboard bus, train and ferry

Your go card is for your use only and is not transferable for use by anyone else.

This ensures the cardholder is responsible for all fares, fees and charges incurred by the use of the card.

Travelling by bus
  • touch on at the front of the bus
  • touch off at either the front or rear of the bus
  • card readers are activated at designated bus stops only (you cannot touch on or off at a card reader while the bus is in motion and between stops).

View go card clips for travelling by bus.

Travelling by train
  • card readers are located on the station platforms at QR stations
  • major stations have card readers attached to fare gates
  • touch on when you enter the station
  • touch off when you exit the station
  • at fare gates touch on or off, even when the gates are open
  • if you are transferring between train services only, touch on at the beginning of your journey and touch off at the end of your journey (there is no need to touch your card between train services).

Travelling by ferry
  • touch on at the beginning of your journey
  • touch off at the end of your journey
  • card readers are activated at designated ferry stops only (you cannot touch on or off at a card reader while the ferry is in motion and between stops).

Touching on and off

  • just touch your card to the TransLink logo on the card reader
  • check that a green or amber light is displayed
  • it's important to remember to touch on and off so the system knows what fare to charge you
  • if you forget, the system will charge a fixed amount.

View go card clips for touching on and off.

When you touch on
  • if you have an adult go card, when you touch on and off you will see a green light next to the target (this means you are ready to travel)
  • if you have a concession, child or senior go card, an amber light will be displayed (this means you are ready to travel)
  • the card reader display will show your available balance.

When you touch off

  • check that a green or amber light is displayed
  • the card reader display will show the fare for your journey and the remaining balance on your go card.

What if the card reader doesn't work?

If the card reader displays a red light, your card was not read, please try again.

If you get another red light
  • please try another card reader
  • ask station staff or bus driver for assistance
  • call TransLink on 13 12 30.

What if I forget to touch on or touch off?

If you don't touch on or off, the system won't be able to calculate the correct fare and will charge you a non-refundable fixed amount. This fixed amount may be more than the correct fare for your journey.

The next time you use your go card the card reader display will show you have been charged a fixed amount. If you see this message do not touch on again, your touch has been recorded.

How do I cancel a journey?

To cancel a journey after you have touched on, wait 10 seconds and touch your card again at the same bus or ferry stop (on board the service) or train station within 20 minutes. The card reader will display a message showing that no fare was deducted and the available balance remaining on your go card.

If you are at a gated train station, you must exit the station through a fare gate to cancel your journey.

Transferring between services

You can use your go card to travel on a number of different TransLink services (bus, ferry and train) during one journey.

Your go card will automatically calculate one overall fare for the whole journey, as long as you follow the transfer rules:

  • you must touch on to start each new trip of your journey in the same zone (or adjoining zone for stops with dual zone) that you touched off in to finish the previous trip
  • after you touch off to finish each trip of your journey, you must touch on to start the next trip within the 60 minute transfer window
  • after touching on to the system at the beginning of your journey, you must touch on to start the final trip of your journey within the three and a half hour maximum transfer time
  • you must touch off at the end of the last trip of your journey within the five hour maximum journey time
  • you can transfer up to three times in one journey
  • when transferring between train services only, you touch on to start your journey and touch off at the end of your journey, not between train services.

For example:
  • if you transfer from a bus to ferry, touch on and off on the bus, and touch on and off on the ferry
  • if you transfer from a train to a bus, touch on at the boarding station, touch off at the alighting station and then touch on and off on the bus
  • if you travel by train and need to transfer between train services, do not touch on or off between services – touch on at the start of your journey and touch off when you reach your final destination.

If your transfer is within these rules you will see the message Continuation of Travel displayed on the card reader when you touch on at the start of each new trip. The continuation of travel message will appear on the card reader when you transfer between services provided you follow the transfer rules.

Checking your balance and transaction history

You can check the balance of your go card

If your balance falls below $7, the card reader will make three short beeps and the screen will display a ‘low balance’ warning.

If your card goes into a negative balance when you touch off, the system will deduct the correct fare but you will be unable to touch on again until you top up your card.
